As I blended this fiber, I must have been craving sweet things. The colors reminded me of ice cream with candy in it that's just melted enough to color the ice cream.
This roving is sold in 1-ounce batches so that you can pick how many ounces you'd like. The fiber is a blend of hand-dyed merino and black alpaca from our boy Benz. I dyed the fibers and then blended them on a hackle. The result is a soft and squishy blend that I'm dying to spin myself!
How much do I need?
Most of these spinning batts are sold by the ounce. So you may be wondering how much you need to buy to make something. The long answer is, "it depends." But the short guideline is this:
- 4-6 ounces for small projects like hats, mittens, gloves, and socks
- 6-8 ounces for medium projects like scarves and small shawls
- 8-12 ounces for larger projects like large shawls
- Sweaters and similar large items of varying size can take anywhere from 16 to 32 ounces
About this alpaca
Benz has big cow-eyes and a penchant for looking deep into your soul and asking, "do you have any minerals for me?" He's the calmest, most trusting alpaca in the herd (in fact, it was his patience with us that allowed us to grow into comfortable alpaca owners).
